In many of the Davidic psalms, the reader sees that David didn’t have it easy. There were threats to his life before he became king, and there were threats to his life after he became king. In Books I and II (Psalms 1–41 and Psalm 42–72, respectively), we see David expressing, again and again, his confidence in God despite the opposition of those who wanted to destroy him.
While David’s earthly circumstances could be challenging, a certain resolve emanated from his words, especially his words in Psalm 63. He said, “Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you” (Ps. 63:3).
His words form quite a claim, and we need to think about it.
