I want to strongly recommend something to you: the “lost sermons” of Charles Spurgeon.
Charles Spurgeon lived from 1834 to 1892, and the good folks at B&H have brought to life a whole smattering of sermons that Spurgeon preached from 1851 to 1854.
In 1851, Spurgeon would’ve been 17 years old, so we’re talking really early Spurgeon. These outlines and sermons are rich and illuminating, as readers get to glimpse Spurgeon in the early years of his preaching ministry. The typesetting and transcription make the meaning of the handwriting easy to read and understand. And photographs of his manuscripts add a beautiful touch to these elegant volumes.
The Lost Sermons of C. H. Spurgeon is not a small project. It is seven volumes in scope. Volume 1 appeared in 2017, and Volume 7 appeared in 2022. A whole crew was involved in compiling and editing these sermons, including Geoffrey Chang, Jason G. Duesing, Phillip Ort, and Christian T. George.
These sermons were lost to history for nearly 160 years. What a tremendous service the volume editors and the B&H team are doing for the Church! The estimate is that these volumes add a stunning 10% of new Spurgeon material to what we already knew and could access. Think about how amazing that is.
I love reading about Spurgeon, and I love reading Spurgeon’s sermons. I’m thrilled to have this collection of his “lost sermons” to read and enjoy.
Let’s be honest: you know someone who would love these volumes. Maybe it’s you! Do you know a Spurgeon aficionado? Are you looking for a gift for your minister? Are you seeking to build a collection of writings from church history? Do you want something in your family library that will put you and your children in touch with the early sermons of one of church history’s greatest Baptist preachers?
This set is one to get. And soon. You can buy the volumes individually (which is better than not!), but right now on Lifeway’s website, the ENTIRE SET is more than 60% off, though I don’t know for how long. There’s a special Collector’s Edition that’s more than 60% off as well. Incredible!
I’m grateful for the painstaking work involved in this multi-year project of Spurgeon’s “lost sermons.” These volumes will increase our awareness and appreciation of his preaching and ministry.
