When readers leave the conquest chapters of Joshua 1–12, they enter a different literary unit in the book. And it challenges us. The details are many, and the chapters are many. In Joshua 13–21, the reader is confronted with a series of land allotments. The reading isn’t easy. And many villages are unknown—in addition to the difficulty of pronouncing the names!
But let’s not miss the forest for the trees. These chapters are telling the detailed fulfillments of God’s words and promises. The chapters warrant celebration and exultation. They should prompt awe and praise. Details shouldn’t be thought of as dull when they’re highlighting the faithfulness of God.
