507 years ago—on October 31, 1517—Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. Luther was convinced that you couldn’t buy forgiveness and that the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church were exploiting the naïve and vulnerable.

The gospel was not a message about your works. It wasn’t about trying harder, securing indulgences, or shaving off time in purgatory.
